Then choose the ring.

How to Measure Ring Size at Home

The right number is only the beginning. A ring has to rest comfortably, pass the knuckle and work with the width and structure of the design.

Start with the real finger. The hand, knuckle and construction belong in the same decision.

01 / The direct answer

Use the best tool you have. Know its limit.

A repeatable range is more useful than one perfect-looking number.

The most dependable at-home method is a physical finger gauge on the exact finger and hand that will wear the ring. If a well-fitting, perfectly round ring already exists for that finger, measure its inside diameter and compare it with the chart.

A non-stretch paper strip can provide a rough estimate. Repeat it and confirm the result before buying a fixed-size or wide ring.

Measure when the hand feels normal, indoors, and not immediately after cold, heat, exercise, travel or a salty meal. Take two or three readings at different times.

These are not three equal methods. Tool choice changes the confidence you should place in the result.

Keep diameter and circumference separate

02 / The fit model

Rest. Passage. Structure.

Two rings with the same size label can feel different because the number does not describe the whole object.

02

Passage

The knuckle the ring must cross without force or immediate slipping.

03

Structure

Width, interior, openness and top weight change how the size feels.

03 / Three methods

Measure once for the number. Again for the decision.

Metal ring gauge being tested over a knuckle
METHOD 01

Physical finger gauge

Best for · the most reliable at-home start

Choose a gauge that passes the knuckle with mild resistance, then make a loose fist, open the hand and rotate it gently at the base.

  • Use a gauge similar in width to the intended ring.
  • It should resist a light pull without pinching.
  • Keep both readings if you fall between sizes.

METHOD 02

A ring that already fits

Best for · the same finger and hand

Measure from one inner edge to the opposite inner edge through the center. Do not include the metal. A caliper is easier to read than a ruler.

  • Use a perfectly round, unwarped ring.
  • Check two directions to confirm it is round.
  • Never use an open, oval or double-finger ring as the reference.

METHOD 03

Non-stretch paper strip

Best for · a rough backup only

Wrap a narrow strip flat around the finger base, mark the overlap, remove it and measure the length in millimeters. That length is the approximate inside circumference.

  • Repeat at least three times.
  • Check the knuckle as well as the base.
  • Paper can tilt or compress skin; string can stretch.

US ring size chart.

Use inside diameter for a perfectly round reference ring. Use inside circumference for a finger gauge or paper-strip reading. Values are approximate; construction and manufacturing tolerance still affect the final fit.

US size Inside diameter Inside circumference
3 14.1 mm 44.3 mm
3.5 14.5 mm 45.6 mm
4 14.9 mm 46.8 mm
4.5 15.3 mm 48.1 mm
5 15.7 mm 49.3 mm
5.5 16.1 mm 50.6 mm
6 16.5 mm 51.8 mm
6.5 16.9 mm 53.1 mm
7 17.3 mm 54.3 mm
7.5 17.7 mm 55.6 mm
8 18.1 mm 56.9 mm
8.5 18.5 mm 58.1 mm
9 19.0 mm 59.7 mm
9.5 19.4 mm 60.9 mm
10 19.8 mm 62.2 mm
10.5 20.2 mm 63.5 mm
11 20.6 mm 64.7 mm
11.5 21.0 mm 66.0 mm
12 21.4 mm 67.2 mm
12.5 21.8 mm 68.5 mm
13 22.2 mm 69.7 mm
54.3 ≠ 54.3

A 54.3 mm circumference corresponds to about a 17.3 mm inside diameter and US size 7. Identify the measurement before reading across.

05 / Fit and form

The number translates. Movement confirms.

The mirror test.

The ring should pass the knuckle with gentle resistance, settle without pain and require a small controlled twist to remove. Test again later in the day before deciding.

Balanced

Secure at rest; removable with a controlled twist.

Too tight

Pain, numbness, throbbing or a deep persistent mark.

Too loose

No knuckle resistance, constant spinning or downward sliding.

Band width changes the answer

Do not apply one automatic “size up” rule.

A broad band covers more skin and may feel closer than a narrow ring carrying the same size label. Interior curvature, edges, openness and finger anatomy still matter.

Open and double-finger forms

A range is not everyone.

An adjustable opening extends the fit range; it does not erase finger size. The top must sit in proportion, the ends must not press, and adjustment must stay within the product's intended range.

A double-finger ring needs two measurements plus the distance and angle between moving fingers. A single US number cannot describe the whole relationship.

Aira's verified 3.33 cm top span is a construction measurement. Comfort still has to be tested across both fingers in motion.

Seven avoidable mistakes

Most wrong sizes begin before checkout.

Common ring measuring errors arranged on a worn work table
01

Measuring the wrong hand

The same named finger can differ between hands.

02

Ignoring the knuckle

A ring that fits the base may not pass the widest point.

03

Pulling paper or string tight

Compression creates a falsely small result.

04

Measuring only once

A repeated range is more trustworthy than one reading.

05

Using an oval or open ring

The diameter chart assumes a perfectly round interior.

06

Mixing diameter and circumference

Label the number before using the chart.

07

Ignoring construction

Wide, top-heavy, adjustable and double-finger rings behave differently.

Measuring a borrowed round ring with a ruler for a surprise gift

06 / Sizing a gift

Borrow a ring. Not a guess.

Use a ring the recipient already wears on the same finger and hand. Measure its inside diameter, note its approximate width and return it promptly.

If the finger cannot be confirmed, do not infer size from a photograph, hand outline, glove size, height or body type. Choose a design with a clearly stated adjustment range or continue to our guide to jewelry gifts when you do not know her size.

07 / Practical questions

Frequently asked questions.

What is the most accurate way to measure ring size at home?+

A physical finger-gauge set used on the exact finger and hand is the most dependable at-home method. Use a gauge similar in width to the intended ring, check that it passes the knuckle, and repeat the test at different times. A professional measurement is the safer final check for expensive, fixed-size or difficult-to-resize rings.

How do I measure ring size from a ring I already own?+

Use a well-fitting, perfectly round ring worn on the same finger and hand. Measure the inside diameter through the center in millimeters, excluding the metal, then compare that number with the diameter column of the US chart. Do not use an open, oval or adjustable ring as the reference.

Is paper or string accurate for ring sizing?+

It can provide a rough estimate, but it is less dependable than a finger gauge or a correctly measured ring. Paper can tilt or compress the skin; string can stretch. Repeat the measurement, check the knuckle, and confirm the result before buying a fixed-size or wide ring.

When should I measure if my fingers swell?+

Measure on more than one occasion when your hands feel normal, and record the comfortable range. Avoid relying only on a reading taken when the hand is unusually cold, hot or swollen. The ring should remain removable and comfortable through ordinary daily changes.

What should I do if I am between ring sizes?+

Keep both readings and evaluate the ring's width, interior shape, top weight and adjustability. There is no universal instruction to choose the larger size. Use a gauge similar to the intended ring or follow its specific fit guidance; seek a professional measurement when the decision is consequential.

Do wide rings fit differently?+

Often, yes. A wide band contacts more skin and can feel closer than a narrow band marked with the same size. Test with a wide gauge or the actual ring when possible instead of automatically adding a fixed amount.

Does an adjustable ring fit everyone?+

No. An adjustable opening creates a range, not an unlimited fit. Finger size, band width, top scale, end position and the safe adjustment range still matter. Begin with a measured size and adjust only as the product guidance allows.

Sizing method and chart were checked against the current international ring-size standard and professional jewelry measurement guidance. Product dimensions are current TUUGLOW catalog facts checked September 1, 2026. A paper-strip result remains an estimate.

Keep the measurement attached to the design.

Write down the finger, hand, knuckle and construction beside the number. Then compare width and proportion before choosing.
